SARS doctor demands apology for Tiananmen, detention

A military doctor who became a national hero for blowing the whistle on the government’s cover-up of the 2003 SARS epidemic has asked the government to apologize for his detention, Reuters reported. Jiang Yanyong was put in an army "guesthouse" and spent months under house arrest in 2004 after detailing his experiences treating victims of the government crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators in Tiananmen Square in 1989. He accused the army of using fragmentation bullets banned by international convention and said soldiers were duped into thinking they were suppressing a rebellion. Jiang’s most recent letter to President Hu Jintao contains no new allegations, but is likely to upset the government by raising the issue of the Tiananmen protests months before its 20th anniversary.
