A total of Yn44.5bn is to be spent on cleaning up Guangdong's Pearl River, said Xinhua. The money will go towards building wastewater processing plants and other schemes for cleaning up the river and its tributaries. The province has identified 175 firms that are considered a serious threat to the river's water quality and they will be ordered to meet new requirements.
The Guangdong Environmental Protection Bureau predicted that the threat of pollution would be 'fundamentally solved' by 2010. However, it admitted that by then only 80 per cent of the water would meet the required standard.
