An SEF official said The Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) is considering ways to help Taiwanese businesses operating in China make inroads into China’s domestic market.

Kao Koong-lian, SEF vice chairman and secretary-general, made the remarks during an informal meeting with the media after visiting Shenzhen and Dongguan in southeastern Guangdong province.

Kao noted that Taiwanese businesses in Guangdong mainly target European, American and Japanese markets, and, having been stung by the global economic crisis, they are now looking for alternative paths.

He said, ‘A lot of Taiwanese businesses expressed the hope of upgrading and transforming their operations, and they also talked about making inroads into China’s domestic market.’

Indicating that the SEF will provide the necessary assistance, Kao disclosed plans to work with several established Taiwanese distributors in China, such as RT-Mart and Sogo, to set up special zones to sell quality Taiwanese products and promote the country’s brands.
