The Shanghai government has signed up Walt Disney to build the sixth international Disneyland. It will be the second in China.
Disneyland will open some time between 2014 and 2015 and is projected to bring in more than RMB10 billion (US$1.5 billion) additional tourist revenue for Shanghai.
The first Disneyland Park, in Anaheim, California, was opened to the general public on July 18, 1955. Disneyland has a larger cumulative attendance than any other theme park in the world, with close to 600 million visitors since it opened.
In 2009, 15.9 million people visited the park, making it the second most visited park in the world during that calendar year. Thus while Disney and its characters may be somewhat elderly (Mickey Mouse is 82 years old) they can still pull the public in droves.
Gerson Lehrman Group sees the Shanghai Disneyland following in this history of success.
