Shanghai’s government has announced rules barring spouses of top local officials from going into private business and forbidding both spouses and children from going into business in Shanghai, The New York Times reported, citing an announcement on the municipality’s official website. The rules do not appear to stop the families of officials from elsewhere in the country from going into business in Shanghai, and children of top officials can still enter the private sector outside of that city’s borders. In recent years many families of officials or their business partners have moved their companies inland, away from high-profile cities like Shanghai and Beijing.
