Shanghai will reveal plans today to develop the city’s status as a regional shipping hub, the South China Morning Post reported, citing sources familiar with the matter. Tax incentives, infrastructure upgrades and an arbitration court to settle international disputes are among the measures the Shanghai government will likely use to attract shipping agencies to Yangshan port. However, some analysts said the plans to develop Shanghai into a shipping hub could come at the cost of efforts to make the city an international financial center. “At this stage we will devote most of our efforts to seeking breakthroughs in the shipping sector while remaining cautious about rolling out major financial market innovations,” the paper quoted a government official as saying.
