China announced that it discovered oil reserves of 280 million tons in the Shengli oilfield in Shandong province. The find will help ease oil shortages in China, which have increased over the past decade as output at earlier finds at the Shengli oilfield and Daqing oilfields in Heilongjiang province have dropped. Chinese scientists made the new find using new technologies, which they developed to improve their ability to discover new oil resources as well as increase the output of existing oilfields.
