We try to avoid references to things happening beyond the wall surrounding the PRC, but sometimes it has to be done. While the US system continues to work at resolving the anomaly that is the Trump presidency, and with a sense growing that Mueller may be getting close to revealing his hand with all the implications for Trump and the world that that involves, we have a number of active US angles to the China story this week.
The UN passed tough new US-sponsored sanctions on North Korea with China voting in favor, Ivanka and Jared’s Beijing trip was canceled (which is a great shame as it would have created some fantastic visuals), the THAAD missile system in South Korea went live and the Global Times went ballistic in response, a Chinese bid for a US semi-conductor manufacturer – Lattice – was nixed by the US government, and Jared got to meet with a senior Chinese official – Yang Jiechi – anyway to help prepare for the scheduled November Trump visit to China. Busy times on shifting sands.
Meanwhile, as the countdown to the Glorious 19th continues – October 18 is the start date – China increasingly feels in lockdown mode. No news is allowed from now until afterwards, is for sure the message going out from the Center. That is why the US and Korea are so interesting: they are not controllable by Those in Command. Keep your eyes peeled for the unexpected and have a good weekend.
