[photopress:Yangtze_River.gif,full,alignright]The Three Gorges Dam has eased navigation in the Chuanjiang section of the Yangtze River, leading to a solid shipping industry in Sichuan and Chongqing. This section of the river covers Yibin and Luzhou in Sichuan, Chongqing and Yichang.
The rise in water level, as a result of the dam project, has submerged groups of rocks that were previously hazardous to ships trying to navigate the route.
In 2005 ships transported 50% of all cargo leaving Chongqing. This year the figure is expected to increase to 60% due to eased navigation routes.
The low cost of shipping goods compared to transporting them by road has also contributed to the growth of Chongqing’s shipping industry.
