Singapore and China sign deals for closer ties on BRI

Singapore has agreed to deepen its involvement in China’s now-infamous Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the Straits Times reports, signalling a “new highlight” in the countries’ bilateral cooperation according to the Prime Minister Li Keqiang.

During Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s five-day visit to China, a bilateral meeting of trade officials and business leaders identified areas where the two countries could increase cooperation and gain mutual return.

A topic of particular interest was the Chongqing Connectivity Initiative – Southern Transport Corridor, which both leaders noted has connected the overland Silk Road with the 21st Century.

Singapore’s Minister for Trade and Industry Lim Hng Kiang said: “Singapore’s strength as a key infrastructure, financial and legal hub in the region will add value to Chinese companies expanding along the Belt and Road.”
