A knife-wielding assailant attacked civilians at Guangzhou railway station on Tuesday, wounding more than six people, South China Morning Post reported. Witnesses said four men began attacking passengers at random at about 11:30am but state media later said only one man was involved. The suspect was shot and detained. The train station in Yuexiu district resumed normal operations by 2pm. This follows a spate of explosions and terrorist attacks in Urumqi and Kunming this year. These recent events have prompted authorities to increase security in major Chinese cities; since May 1, more than 14,000 police officers have been patrolling Guangzhou’s streets.
