A Chinese foreign trade ministry official said that Japan's strict new inspection rules for imports of frozen spinach from China were seriously impairing the development of bilateral trade, Reuters reported. The ministry claims that frozen spinach exports to Japan had fallen from 900 tonnes a week in the first half of the year to zero in August.
China says the dispute was precipitated by Japan's adoption of a standard for the permitted level of chlorpyrifos, a widely used insecticide, that was one-fifth that used by the US and EU. The standard was imposed after Japan found high amounts of pesticides in some Chinese spinach earlier this year.
