[photopress:IT_sugar_power_for_Sony.jpg,full,alignright]The idea is not that you should stir the battery in your morning coffee. But the battery casing is made of a vegetable-based plastic, and it does operate on sugar and can generate enough electricity to power a music player and a pair of speakers.
It comes from Sony which has had mixed experiences with its batteries.
The prototype is 1.5 inches along each edge and works by pouring sugar solution into the unit, where enzymes break it down to generate electricity.
Sony said test cells had an output of 50 milliwatts which is very little but these are early days.
Sony, in a statement, said, ‘Sugar is a naturally occurring energy source produced by plants through photosynthesis. It is therefore regenerative, and can be found in most areas of the Earth, underlining the potential for sugar-based batteries as an ecologically-friendly energy device of the future.’
The company said it aims to produce the batteries for commercial use, without specifying when.
Possibly one day we will be asking our laptop whether it would prefer one lump or two. Artificial sweetener will not hack it.
