A surprise trade data release from China’s customs agency on Tuesday revealed a slowdown in exports growth to the US in June, but the validity of the figures has been met with scepticism from analysts.
The report, only covering exports to the US and not part of a regular monthly publication, showed growth in Chinese goods sold to the US edged down to 5.4% year-on-year in the first half of the year from 5.8% over the first five months.
As the Wall Street Journal reports, some analysts viewed the data as part of Beijing’s strategy to deal with tariff threats from the US. The usual trade data release published next week is expected to maintain double-digit growth in exports as per recent months.
