SUVs no panacea for automakers' slowing China sales

Automakers seeking to bolster slowing China sales through the debut of sport-utility vehicles may face an already saturated market as 32 new SUV models are expected to have been rolled out by the year’s end, Reuters reported, citing consultancy Automotive Foresight. “The good old days will pass, when you could just launch any model and you could have pretty good sales,” said Yale Zhang, head of the consultancy. Even as firms including Ford Motor Co present new SUVs at the Guangzhou auto show, official data show SUV prices dropped 3.4% in the first nine months of 2015, outpacing a 1.2% decline for passenger vehicles generally.
