A tainted milk formula scandal initially involving Hebei-based Sanlu Group widened yesterday after a nationwide inspection of baby milk powder from 175 Chinese companies revealed 69 brands of powder from 22 companies had traces of the chemical melamine, AFP reported, citing state media. Some formula produced by the companies involved was exported. Food inspectors in Hong Kong ordered a recall after melamine was found in an ice cream bar made by Shanghai Yili AB Foods, though the city’s Center for Food Safety said the amounts of the chemical "would not pose major health effects from normal consumption." Tainted milk has sickened more than 1,200 infants across several provinces and is blamed for causing kidney stones in infants that may have killed two babies earlier this year.
