Taiwan may issue visa to exiled Uighur leader

Taiwan is considering issuing a visa to exiled Uighur activist Rebiya Kadeer, a move that would likely create tensions with Beijing, the South China Morning Post reported. Two pro-independence groups, Guts United, Taiwan and the Taiwan Youth Anti-Communist Corps, claim that Kadeer and her husband have accepted an invitation to visit the island. Paul Lin, director of the Corps, said the invitation had been delivered personally in Washington by a member of Guts United. Lawmakers from the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party demanded Tuesday that the government reveal whether it would allow Kadeer entry. Last month, the government – which is controlled by the Kuomintang, a party more sympathetic to Beijing – permitted the Dalai Lama to visit Taiwan. One lawmaker said the government is obliged to deal with the issue because two private organizations had invited Kadeer.
