Taiwan protestors demonstrate against open China policies

Anti-government demonstrators took to the streets in Taipei on Sunday to protest policies of greater economic and political engagement with the mainland, AP reported. The police estimated the crowd at 100,000 though the Democratic Progressive Party, which organized the protest, put the number at 600,000. Protestors were targeting Taiwan President Ma Ying-Jeou’s plan to sign a free trade agreement with the mainland. Separately, China said it would encourage mainland businesses to invest in Taiwan and invite Taiwan businesses to expand on the mainland and join in key projects such as infrastructure. Speaking on the second day of the Straits Forum in the southern coastal city of Xiamen, the head of the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office said the mainland will buy more Taiwan goods, encourage more tourism, and sign an economic cooperation agreement with Taiwan.
