Taiwan tests missiles to mixed results

Taiwan test-launched 19 interceptor missiles Tuesday on the eve of the meeting between Chinese President Hu Jintao and US President Barack Obama, the New York Times reported.  Six of the missiles missed their targets, and Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou was reportedly displeased with the results. In the past Ma has said that the island is more at risk from natural disasters than a military attack from the mainland, but the tests, and their timing, indicate that Ma is increasingly concerned about China’s new military posture. Last week the Chinese military unveiled a new stealth fighter, which is at least a generation ahead of Taiwan’s air force, if Beijing’s claims about its capabilities are correct.
