Tourists in Taiwan
Taiwan will hold talks with the mainland later this month to further relax mainland rules on allowing its tourists to visit the island.
Janice Lai, director-general of the Tourism Bureau said, ‘The two sides will meet in Hong Kong before or after the Chinese New Year holiday to discuss about the expansion of visits to Taiwan by mainland tourists.’
Last year there was an agreement to promote flight and tourism exchanges for 3,000 Chinese tourists to visit the island per day.
The number of visitors has fallen far short of the target, due mainly to Beijing allowing residents of only 13 provinces to register for Taiwan visits, with 33 travel agencies.
Janice Lai said, ‘Now that the number of direct charter flights tripling to 108 a week, we hope the mainland can also increase the number of provinces and travel agencies by threefold so more mainland tourists can visit Taiwan.’
She said 10,000 tourists from the mainland are expected for the upcoming nine-day Chinese New Year holiday.
