The long-running dispute between semiconductor firms Micron and Fujian Jinhua took center stage during last week’s round of negotiations in Washington, reflecting the central role of tech firms in the wider US-China standoff.
Sources told the FT that officials are trying to reach a resolution to outstanding charges levied by Micro and Fujian Jinhua against one another over intellectual property ownership, as a “confidence-building” measure between the two governments.
President Trump also invited speculation on Friday as to whether he would implicate telecommunications companies Huawei and ZTE Corp in any eventual trade deal, before adding that US officials have no plans to drop charges against Huawei for financial fraud and technology theft from T-Mobile.
ZTE prominently featured in an early agreement to lower the bilateral trade deficit made last year after crippling sanctions forced the company temporarily out of business. Micron has also been tangled up with the Chinese government which is currently investigating it alongside Samsung and other electronics brands for alleged price-fixing.
