TEDA named a model green industrial park

A working meeting for state-level eco-industrial parks (sound like a contradiction in terms but is not) was held in TEDA (Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area) and granted certificates to China’s first batch of accredited state-level eco-industrial parks such as TEDA, Suzhou Industrial Park and Suzhou National New and Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone.

An eco-industrial park is a new form of industrial park designed to fit the requirements of circular economy, industrial ecology, and clean production.

Companies within the park aim for coordinated development through the exchange of byproducts and wastes amongst themselves, utilization of energy and sewage water, and sharing of infrastructures.

Currently, there are altogether 54 state-level economic development zones and 54 state-level hi-tech development zones in China, among which 26 have been approved as eco-industrial model parks.

During the meeting it was agreed the building of eco-industrial parks should be accelerated.

Tianjin has always seen energy conservation, pollution reduction, pollution prevention, environmental protection and urban landscaping as integral parts of its economic growth.

By the end of 2007:

1. Energy consumption per RMB10,000 GDP down 4.9%
2. SO₂ emission down 4.03%
3. COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) down 4%.

This is better than the environmental targets set out by the Central Government.
