Chinese tech juggernaut Tencent is recruiting experts in the field of autonomous driving for a new research base in Silicon Valley, in a sign that the company is looking to new markets to offset its flagging games business, the Financial Times reports.
Tencent, the operator of ubiquitous messenger service WeChat, has advertised jobs on LinkedIn for professionals with expertise in “cutting edge technologies in machine learning.”
“As a Chinese company which is pursuing new markets and growing rapidly in the US, we maintain an entrepreneurial spirit and open mindset,” the listing read.
Tencent is a relative newcomer to the autonomous car market, signing its first deal last year with Guangzhou Automobile Group to build internet-linked “smart cars.” Its rivals in the Chinese tech space, search engine Baidu and e-commerce giant Alibaba, have both already conducted self-driving car tests in China.
