[photopress:Chinatelcom.jpg,full,alignright]China Telecom, the nation’s biggest fixed-line phone operator, has reported that third-quarter sales rose 4.1 percent after gaining Internet users. Net income was RMB5.2 billion, or $658 million, China Telecom. Sales climbed 4.1 percent to RMB42.8 billion.
The company has started new services like interactive television and signed on Internet users to make up for slowing growth for fixed lines as more people shift to cellphones.
According to the Chinese Ministry of Information Industry about 33 percent of people in China owned cellphones at the end of August, compared to 28 percent with fixed lines.
In September, China Telecom started offering Internet television services with Shanghai Media Group, a state-owned broadcaster. Yang Bingfeng, head of the Internet television department for China Telecom said the company is also testing Internet television services in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Shantou.
China Telecom added 2.09 million broadband Internet users in the third quarter, compared with 1.8 million a year earlier and 2.1 million in the second quarter.
