Think tank: Emissions targets within China's reach

China is on course to meet targets for curbing its greenhouse gas emissions, according to a report by E3G, a climate change think tank, the Financial Times reported. E3G said that reforestation and a low-carbon transport sector, alongside improvements in energy efficiency and investments in renewable power had put China on course for lower emissions than would be expected under the “business as usual” scenario. Its analysis is based on calculations of national wealth per unit of carbon emission, which is supposed to indicate how competitive countries would be under carbon limits. The results for China suggested that if the country continues to improve at its current rate, it would be able to meet the demands of developed nations at the Copenhagen climate change talks in December. However, Matthew Findlay, program director at E3G, warned that China must meet the targets set in its current five-year plan and toughen requirements in future plans.
