Three Gorges Dam to displace another 4m people

A further 4 million people will be moved away from the Three Gorges Dam area over the next 10 to 15 years because of environmental damage, the government has announced. This is three times the number initially displaced. The relocation plan is seen as further evidence that the hydroelectric dam, which was supposed to be China's crowning engineering achievement, represents the mounting environmental problems created by rapid economic growth. The residents are to be moved away from the reservoir behind the dam due to concerns that the water will be contaminated by pollution and settlements will be vulnerable to landslides, the Wall Street Journal reported. River banks have already collapsed in 91 places near Chongqing, the western Chinese city that the Three Gorges project is supposed to help rejuvenate as larger ships are able to travel up the Yangtze River.
