Tillerson to press China on North Korea

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson slammed “20 years of failed approach” to North Korea and indicated the US would take a more assertive stance with China to tackle Pyongyang’s nuclear threat, The Wall Street Journal reports.  After meeting with Japan’s foreign minister, Fumio Kishida, on Thursday, Tillerson offered little detail on the Trump administration’s continuing review of policy toward North Korea at a press conference. However, Tillerson highlighted China’s influence as North Korea’s main economic and political benefactor. He is set to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Saturday. China, in turn, has emphasized talks with North Korea, while also signing on to United Nations sanctions against Pyongyang in recent years. Earlier this month, China proposed the simultaneous suspensions of North Korea’s nuclear-weapons program and US-South Korean joint military drills to pave the way for restarting denuclearization talks. The US rejected the idea.
