Top planner: Overheating trend still not contained

China's top economic planner has warned that the economy is still in danger of overheating, the South China Morning Post reported. National Development and Reform Commission chairman Ma Kai said overheating would be caused by continued investments in energy-intensive and polluting industries. He said industrial production, which grew 18.1% year-on-year in May, was still too high. "This shows that the trend towards economic overheating still hasn't been contained," he said. He also said that "such a trend is hard to curb under the current fiscal system." He was speaking to the Standing Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, which is the country's top advisory body. Last month, a report claimed China had surpassed the United States as the world's leading carbon dioxide emitter, although Beijing has disputed the finding.
