Three days of negotiations in Beijing between US and Chinese officials wrapped up on Wednesday amid an air of optimism towards the prospect of striking a trade deal, the Financial Times reports.
The Office of the United States Trade Representative said in a statement after the final sitting that China reiterated its commitment to buy a “substantial amount” of agricultural and manufacturing products from the US to lower the trade deficit.
The US team also pressed China on its efforts to protect intellectual property theft and forced technology transfers – two central complaints underpinning the trade war.
“Officials discussed the need for any agreement to provide for complete implementation subject to ongoing verification and effective enforcement,” the USTR said.
China’s commerce ministry said that this week’s talks were “extensive, deep and thorough” and addressed “structural issues of common concern, which promoted mutual understanding and established a foundation for the resolution of each others’ concerns.”
