President Donald Trump has accused China of interfering in upcoming US midterm elections due to anger from Beijing over his administration’s recent trade pressure, Reuters reports.
Chairing a UN Security Council meeting convened to discuss the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, the US President made the claims directly to the other attendees, including Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi who offered an immediate denial.
“We did not and will not interfere in any country’s domestic affairs. We refuse to accept any unwarranted accusation against China,” said Wang.
After the meeting, Trump noted that the Chinese government’s English-language publication China Daily had bought ad space in an Iowan newspaper as part of a state-led propaganda campaign angled against the Trump administration’s tariff measures.
