Trump claims to have asked China for $1bn deficit reduction plan

US President said in a tweet on Wednesday that he has asked China to develop a plan to reduce its trade surplus with the US by $1 billion this year, the Financial Times reports, doubling down on his commitment to protecting U.S. trade interests.

In his tweet Trump incorrectly described the US’ relationship with China as a ‘Trade Deficit’, whereas it is in fact a surplus.

According to data from the US commerce department, the US currently runs a $375.2 billion deficit with China, suggesting that the proposed $1 billion reduction will have a small impact.
