Armed men abducted two Chinese nationals in the city of Quetta in southwestern Pakistan Wednesday, police said, a rare incident that is likely to raise security concerns around the country’s many China-backed infrastructure projects, according to The Wall Street Journal. The kidnapping comes as thousands of Chinese have moved to Pakistan over the last two years to support investment under Beijing’s flagship “Belt and Road” infrastructure building program across Asia and Europe. China is helping with more than $50 billion in investment in roads, ports, power plants and other crucial infrastructure across the country. Chinese people have rarely had trouble in Pakistan. Westerners are generally the more likely targets of kidnapping. Chinese nationals have become a common sight in the three large cities of Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi. Quetta in Pakistan’s remote western province Balochistan province, is considered a dangerous city, even for Pakistanis, with jihadists groups, ethnic separatists and criminal gangs all active there.
