A 10-day nationwide crackdown on tainted dairy products has led to the recall of more than 170 tons of milk powder, state media reported. Two dairy companies in the Ningxia Hui autonomous region, Ningxia Tiantian and Ningxia Panda, were closed on Saturday for selling milk powder tainted with melamine. Police found that another company from outside the region settled a debt with Ningxia Tiantian through a shipment of 170 tons of milk powder, which turned out to be tainted goods left over from the 2008 scandal that should have been destroyed. Ningxia Tiantian repacked 164.75 tons of the milk powder and then, between July and November of last year, sold it on to five factories in Fujian and Guangdong provinces and the Inner Mongolia autonomous region. So far 72 tons of the milk powder have been recalled. Ningxia Panda was shut down due to its ties with Shanghai Panda Dairy, which was closed last year. Separately, candies made with tainted milk powder were found in Jilin province on Sunday.
