The U.S. commerce department announced on Wednesday that it will impose duties on the imports of cast iron soil pipe fittings from China, Reuters reports, saying that Chinese manufacturers have been unfairly ‘dumping’ on the U.S. market.
An investigation found that the Chinese products have been selling in the U.S. at up to 110% less that fair value. The duties, in the form of cash deposits to be collected from importers, have been designed to counteract this price disparity. A major “dumping” culprit, China’s Sibo International, will receive a similar 110% tariff of its imports.
The market for Chinese cast iron soil pipe fittings in the U.S. currently stands at $8.6 million a year. The duties follow a wider protectionist policy against China by the Trump administration, which imposed quotas on the import of Chinese solar panels and washing machines last month.
