UN chief calls for action on emissions

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon put China and India's environmental efforts in the spotlight once again as he argued that developing countries must do more to fight climate change, the Financial Times reported. Ban made his comments in Bangkok on Monday the day before he was due to travel to Bali for discussions on a successor treaty to the Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2012. He said that industrialized economies must take the lead in dealing with global warming as they have an historic responsibility, but this "does not mean that developing countries should do nothing." Ban added that developing companies would need more support in terms of research and development and the transfer of clean technologies. Despite widespread calls for governments to commit to set targets for cutting emissions, heavy polluters India and China argue that the emissions should be looked at on a per capita basis.
