US agencies block exports to Chinese supercomputer projects

US agencies have placed technical centers in China associated with the massive Tianhe-2 supercomputer on a list of entities acting against US national security or foreign-policy interests, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing a notice from the US Commerce Department that says Tianhe-2 and predecessor Tianhe-1 “are believed to be used in nuclear explosive activities.” The move is a blow for hardware suppliers like Intel, which company spokesperson Chuck Mulloy said was denied an export license late last fall to supply the supercomputer projects with more chips.
