US and China begin another round of trade discussions in Washington

The Trump administration will welcome a delegation of Chinese policymakers in Washington to begin another round of trade talks aimed at building on inconclusive meetings held two weeks ago in Beijing, where both sides revealed long lists of demands if a trade war was to be averted.

Senior White House trade adviser and notable China critic Peter Navarro is to take a backseat role in the talks, administration officials said on Wednesday. The U.S. team will instead be lead by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, reports Reuters.

Representing Beijing’s standpoint is President Xi’s closest economic adviser Liu He, known as a reform-minded economist who has acknowledged issues in the two countries’ bilateral trade relationship.
