US auto-parts maker in US$80 million Dalian venture

In another sign that the gravitational center of the automotive industry is moving to China, Dearborn, Michigan-based automotive supplier Visteon Corp said it will build a new US$80 million facility in Dalian to make air conditioning compressors and components in a joint venture with Halla Climate Control Dalian Co. The new facility, scheduled to open mid 2005, will employ nearly 600. Most of the compressors will be sold in China and the region, the company said. Visteon just opened a US$29.8 million plant in Beijing, a JV with Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Corp, to make air conditioning and engine cooling modules for Beijing Hyundai Motor Co. The venture is 80% owned by Visteon; Beijing Hyundai holds the balance. Visteon did not disclose the ownership breakdown of its Dalian JV.
