The US has said it will not attend the annual meeting of the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) in China next week if Beijing bars Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido from attending, said Reuters.
The Washington-based IADB voted last week to replace Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s board representative with Harvard economist Ricardo Huasmann, who has ties to Guaido.
A senior official from the Trump administration said that the US and its regional allies would “pull quorum” on the meeting in Chengdu if Hausmann is excluded.
It will be the first time for the IADB to hold an annual meeting in China, which has become a major player in Latin America, reportedly spending more than $50 billion over the past decade on an oil-for-loan agreement with Venezuela.
