US imposes tariffs for Chinese solar cells

The US imposed tariffs of up to 4.73% on Chinese solar panel cell manufacturers on Tuesday, arguing that the firms received unfair government export subsidies, the Financial Times reported. The Commerce Department set 2.9% and 4.73% tariffs on Suntech (STP.NYSE) cells and Trina Solar (TSL.NYSE) panels, respectively, and 3.61% for all other Chinese solar manufacturers. The relatively low duty rate seemed to satisfy both those i nthe US calling for tarriffs and others warning about the damage they may cause. Peng Fang, chief executive of JA Solar (JASO.NASDAQ), warned investors of the negative impact this trade dispute could have on the company, saying the “increase of tariffs…will disrupt trade with China will into 2013.” The company has attempted to satisfy US demand by shipping through its “non-China manufacture base, [partners] or through our supply chain.” The Commerce Department will decide in May whether to impose anti-dumping duties on solar-panel producers.
