US urges global action on N Korean missile launch

The US has called for a global effort to ratchet up economic pressure on North Korea as it condemned Pyongyang’s launch of its first intercontinental ballistic missile as a provocative “escalation,” the Financial Times reports. “Global action is required to stop a global threat,” said Rex Tillerson, US secretary of state. “Any country that hosts North Korean guest workers, provides any economic or military benefits, or fails to fully implement UN Security Council resolutions is aiding and abetting a dangerous regime.” North Korea claimed on Tuesday to have launched its first intercontinental ballistic missile, an achievement that would be a significant step towards developing a nuclear weapon capable of hitting the US. Tillerson confirmed that the missile was an ICBM in his statement. Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the UN, requested an emergency Security Council meeting on Wednesday. The missile launch threatens to escalate tensions with President Trump, who vowed that a long-range missile test “won’t happen.”
