Wen: Inflated food prices may spark social unrest

Inflated pork and other food item prices are becoming a national concern and may create social unrest as the poor struggle against rising costs of living, Premier Wen Jiabao warned, the South China Morning Post reported. The price of pork has soared across the mainland, rising 29.3% in April from a year ago and doubling in some cities since the start of this month. Meanwhile, the price of eggs rose 30.9%. The premier urged government departments to control the inflated food prices by boosting production, maintaining the market elements of supply and demand, increasing the supply of pig feed, and providing financial aid to poor families in an effort to maintain social stability. According to the Ministry of Commerce, the government would consider using state meat reserves to curb further price increases.
