Wen: Tibet now calm

China said 105 activists in Tibet surrendered to police after last week’s riots, which began in Lhasa on March 10, Bloomberg reported. The police had offered leniency to activists who turned themselves in. Premier Wen Jiabao said Lhasa is now calm and that it would be "reopened" to the rest of the world. He added that there is a possibility of "organizing" foreign media to observe what has happened in Tibet. Tibetan exiles say 100 protestors were killed by Chinese forces last week, and that many more may have died. A spokesman for the Central Tibetan Administration in Dharamshala, India said 19 protestors were killed yesterday in Gansu province. Meanwhile, the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State urged China to engage in direct talks with the Dalai Lama and to address Tibetans’ grievances.
