Wen: We will boost foreign business confidence in China

Premier Wen Jiabao on Monday participated in a question and answer session with more than 60 foreign executives, making good on a promise to interact more with overseas business, the Wall Street Journal reported. Despite concerns that the investment environment in China is becoming more difficult, the questions directed at Wen were polite, and his answers offered no new insights into Beijing’s thinking. “It is important to reinforce your confidence in China,” Wen told the representatives from companies such as HSBC (HSBA.LSE, 0005.HK, HBC.NYSE), Dow Chemical (DOW.NYSE) and Morgan Stanley (MS.NYSE). “And I believe we can do it.” Wen stressed his opposition to protectionism, his desire for China to reduce carbon emissions, his commitment to further financial system reforms, and his intent on reducing the country’s export dependency. This was the first time Wen had engaged foreign business leaders in a setting open to the overseas media.
