Building work has started on three major infrastructure projects in Shanghai. Work has started on a
second runway at Pudong Inter-national Airport, due to be completed next year, while a new
terminal will be completed in four years time. The airport should be able to handle 60m
passengers a year by the 2010 World Expo.
Meanwhile work has started on clearing the
southern part of the Bund area to prepare for the expo. Many old buildings are being
demolished to make way for modern office towers and sightseeing venues.
The city has
also started work on building a huge exhibition hall in Jiading district in the northwest of the
city to host major car shows. Jt will be situated in a planned Yn50bn 'auto city' that will be
the venue of China's first Formula One grand prix next year and which the government
hopes will become a centre for auto manufacture.
