Work to start on Wuhan tunnel

May 31, 2002

Construction is to start this year on a 3km tunnel under the Yangtze River in Wuhan, capital of Hubei province. The Yn1.7bn project will be built by a local investment and development corporation. When complete in four years, it will be capable of handling 52,000 vehicles a day.

Officials in Guangdong are conducting a feasibility study into building a 30km tunnel between Hong Kong and Zhuhai. The province’s executive vice-governor said that the proposed tunnel was only in the planning stage and he gave no cost or time completion estimates. If built, the tunnel would reduce the driving time between the two cities from two hours to a little over 30 minutes.
