Xinhua News Agency and China Telecom, one of China’s three leading mobile telecom carriers, have together launched a Xinhua TV News channel through the high-speed third-generation network (3G) in Shanghai.
This is important news.
It is another major shift in which the news is brought to the people. A television set, a radio or a newspaper are no longer vital. Indeed, in years to come some of them will not be with us for the purpose of disseminating news. Instead it will come over the mobile phone, which may be nothing like the mobile phone you are used to.
Zhang Weihua, general manager of China Telecom Shanghai Branch said subscribers in Shanghai can get multimedia news services of Xinhua with their "e surfing" cell phones provided by China Telecom.
Xinhua will provide China Telecom Shanghai Branch with exclusive news about the Shanghai Expo, analysis reports and various news items, while the latter will offer telecommunications services.
Xinhua started its video news service on March 1 this year.
China View reported Zhang Weihua as saying that high-quality information services are needed to build Shanghai into an international financial center as well as an international shipping center. True, as yet, the information services on the mobile are not yet great. And, true, the mobile phones will have to improve. But this is the way it will go. The way in which news is disseminated is forever changed.
