At least 115 miners have been rescued from a flooded coal mine in Shanxi province after being trapped for more than a week, Reuters reported. A further 38 miners remained trapped in the pit of the unfinished Wangjialing mine, provincial officials said. Of the rescued miners, 26 were in "relatively serious" condition. Beijing has been pushing for improvements in mine safety as part of a broader effort to consolidate the industry. Mining accident deaths were down to 2,631 in 2009 from 3,215 in 2008. While small, private-owned mines are typically considered the most dangerous, the Wangjialing mine was a joint venture between China National Coal Group (listed subsidiary: China Coal Energy; 1898.HK, 601898.SH) and Shanxi Coking Coal Group, both state-owned firms.
