11th bird flu case discovered

Health ministry officials announced China's 11th official human case of bird flu as authorities tried to contain a fresh outbreak of the disease among chickens, state media reported. A 26-year-old woman, surnamed Lin, from Zhangpu county in eastern Fujian province tested positive for the deadly H5N1 strain of influenza after being hospitalized with fever and pneumonia on January 10. Seven of the 11 human cases to date have died. No outbreak was detected in animals in the region but nearly 200,000 chickens were culled in the northern province of Shanxi after about 15,000 chickens died from the virus last week. It was the first outbreak of the disease in nearly a month, but the 34th since the beginning of last year.
