2003 disaster data released

As many as 490 million Chinese people were affected by natural disasters during 2003, including 2,259 who were killed and 7 million who were displaced, according to data released by the China National Bureau of Statistics. Natural calamities including floods, earthquakes and droughts also caused financial losses of US$22.7 million in 2003 according to the data.
